Large-screen eReaders are becoming increasingly rare. Currently, there are only two options for the consumer market: the Kindle DX and the Tagus Magno, but both are somewhat outdated. Sony recently launched an eReader that is considered a digital notebook, as it is similar in size to an A4 sheet of paper . This device will ultimately not be aimed at the general public due to its exorbitant price; however, the buzz it generated from its presentation at the Tokyo Fair to its release date has attracted the attention of many manufacturers. This appears to be the case with Plastic Logic , a company that manufactures e-ink displays, which has been combining several projects to create the Zephyr eReader.
Zephyr is an eReader with a 15,4″ foldable screen, though its primary function will be in its extended position. Zephyr uses the same technology as the eWall to combine two e-ink displays into one. The two screens are 10,7″ each , which together create a single 15,4″ display with a more than acceptable resolution, though not the best.
Zephyr Features
The Zephyr eReader is quite interesting because it creates a large screen from two smaller ones, although these can also function independently to create a large-screen eReader. As mentioned, the Zephyr is divided into two 10,7″ screens which, when combined, form a 15,4″ display with a resolution of 1280 x 1920. While this isn't as high-resolution as the new Kindle Fire, it's certainly comparable to most eReaders on the market. The screen's sharpness is 150 ppi, a figure similar to Sony's digital notebook, making the Zephyr a very compelling option.
The other features are still unknown, but it's expected that Plastic Logic will give Zephyr a touchscreen, despite the design being difficult to implement due to its two foldable screens. The price is also unknown, although it will likely be cheaper than Sony's digital notebook, but nothing has been confirmed.
Opinion
Large-screen eReaders are more than just an option; they're a necessity. Many users demand a large e-ink display capable of handling ebooks like the Kobo Aura HD or the Kindle Paperwhite . Even so, manufacturers are hesitant to produce these types of eReaders, despite the market's positive response. I don't know the reason for this, but if Plastic Logic shows any inclination, it could change the eReader market. While Zephyr might not be affordable for everyone, it will likely lead to new projects creating inexpensive, large-screen eReaders. Zephyr is based on two 10,7-inch screens, after all. I'll be keeping a close eye on this project, which is sure to generate a lot of buzz in the coming months.
