Why did Sony “give away” the case on its Sony Reader PRS-T3?

Sony

Last week Sony presented its new eReader that promises new and interesting improvements and which he has baptized following almost a tradition as Sony Reader PRS-T3. Of this new device we have already reviewed many of its aspects such as the specifications or characteristics but every day that passes I ask myself a question to which I cannot give a firm answer.

The question is the one that gives title to this article; Why did Sony “give away” the case on its Sony Reader PRS-T3? and to which as I said I have not been able to give an answer but through this article I will try to draw some conclusion.

And it is that if Amazon obtains its benefits through the sale of different digital content, Sony makes all its profits from the sale of its devices and in the case of the PRS-T1 and PRS-T2 through their different covers, very necessary and sold at sometimes abusive prices.

With the arrival of the Sony Reader PRS-T3, the cover is already included with the electronic book so it will not be necessary to acquire it with what Sony loses one of its main income, which is certainly difficult for me to understand since no company in the digital reading market offers a case with its device and I do not see the reason why it is signed Japanese should offer it.

I have thought that it could be a way to differentiate itself from other companies but the loss is very important since, for example, the Sony Reader PRS-T2 cover was worth between 35 and 50 euros depending on the model that was chosen.

The conclusion could be that Sony cares little about the benefits of the eReader market, very likely conclusion or that the benefits offered by these devices are so great that you do not mind offering your users a cover included in the device.

Why do you think Sony decided to include a cover in its new Sony Reader PRS-T3?.

It may be that the e-reader that was designed with the case from the beginning.
Or that the price of the case is already included in the price of the e-reader.
Or that it is something to attract attention and say: «- Amazon does not give you the case and we do.

I think it may be a set of all three.

Well, it is clear that the case it provides does not have a light, that the device itself does not have LED backlighting and that the case with external lighting will be sold separately for 50 euros, so you can not use the current case included. The device costs 150 euros. That is, with lighting included = 200 euros. That's what I think they will do.

I am inclined to think that the «cover» has a durability in time of x…. With which, in the medium term, if you have to open and close the book many times, since the reading is synchronized with the sleep mode when opening and closing, as you run out of cover, you can throw the book away.

I think that more than a change in the type of e-reader, in which from what little I have been able to observe, the screen sharpness is a little greater than its previous model, the inches are reduced a bit, which seems more small and takes up less.

Also the Spanish dictionary that is integrated (I suppose due to user demand), although its support page for books is still non-existent.

I think it has the advantage that by coming with a "case" and also with a "slot for a micro-sd card" on the back (they are two little details they sell), and more than one @ of those who have already gone through their previous models We will surely sting ... because the e-reader is still "very naughty", despite being almost, almost, like its predecessor, the PRST2.

By the way, it is curious to note that on the Mediamark website, a model of the PRST3 was put on sale without a cover or cover (without cover, I think it indicated), a version "limited" to 99 euros ... which ... came without a cover, and the funny thing is that in a short time they rectify by adding the "cover with the price increase" (the Sony PRST149 e-reader is around 159 to 3 euros, depending on where we buy it). With which, I see that they have tried to market - testing first, with something tentative - and the profit of 99 to 149 euros on average, I think it is a profit, more than generous. I don't see a big loss, as far as the "sleeve" is a competitor to Amazon.

Rather, I see that the "hare" is taken by Sony, because she eats and cooks the "case" by herself without having intermediaries, that they take the profits from the case in question.

When the first Sony readers came out, they had more exorbitant prices (not very cheap to say), but for my part, I would not change it for any other reader of any other brand.

The light does not really provide great clarity in a case ... I think that reading with a suitable light source is preferable to having to leave your eyes with an "optical mini-lens", which gives you some light to read.

I understand that the cover is necessary, but I think they have scored a tremendous goal by "integrating reader-cover" into a single pack ... since it "cascaded" or rotates ... it does not synchronize the reading page with the book, with which ... I'll stick with the PRST2 and look, I've been thinking about it for days, but ... it doesn't quite convince me.

Another drawback that I see, is that with the PRICE that the reader has, it should be able to come with a current charger (I have looked for an adapter, because his costs an hour ... of monkey and another of duck) and with That's Easter, but… they could have rounded the market share more, in addition to the improvements implemented, with the POWER ADAPTER.

I think they are giving us like "children", candy by candy ... and thus they are getting business.

    Everyone draws their conclusion ...

That the cover is crap. I have had it since March and it is already very deteriorated, and I do not take the book out of the house much, only this summer on vacation. Come on, I've already bought another one on ebay.
