A few weeks ago, the folks at Sony kindly lent us their new eReader, the Sony PRS-T3 , so we could do a review. A few days ago we published the unboxing video, and today we bring you the review. I know this eReader doesn't have a great reputation right now after Sony abandoned its own ebookstore in favor of Kobo's , although perhaps this is one of the best times to consider it, since Kobo's library is much larger than Sony's. In other words, we've " all at once " received a huge number of ebooks and periodicals, plus we have the option of getting it for a lower price with Kobo's discounts. However, keep in mind that the video was recorded before the news about the ebookstore, so you won't find it mentioned in the video.
Sony PRS-T3, a good Sony product
The PRS-T3 arrived via Sony . What impressed me most was the eReader's packaging . After removing the plastic, liners, and cardboard box, we found the eReader's packaging—the same packaging you see in stores or large retailers. The eReader's security is incredible, especially when compared to competitors like Amazon's Kindle. Once opened, we found the eReader, the documentation, and the USB cable, which we can use to charge the eReader's battery and connect it to a computer.
Regarding technical specifications, you'll find them in the video as well as in other published articles; however, I'd like to highlight two aspects that I believe are key for this eReader. The first is the battery. I think the Sony PRS-T3 is the first eReader that puts the battery accessible to the user, so if we have any problems with it or want to replace it, we can do so without resorting to any technical service. The other noteworthy feature of the Sony PRS-T3 is its screen. While it's true that the PRS-T3 doesn't have a front light like its competitors, it does have a very bright and clear screen, with a white background that few eReaders offer and incredible touch sensitivity. This sensitivity is extremely useful when we want to write notes, underline, or draw on our ebook with just the touch of our finger.
Regarding the Sony PRS-T3 's software , its interface is simple and very intuitive, like that of almost all eReaders. However, we noticed a significant difference: the PRS-T3 takes a long time to load and turn on compared to other eReaders like the Kobo Aura HD. Its startup is slow, but once it's on, the speed and loading of ebooks is very fast—possibly faster than other eReaders like the Kobo Aura HD or the Kindle Paperwhite . It's also worth highlighting the Sony PRS-T3's ability to install and use applications on the eReader. In addition to the basic applications, Sony includes two very useful ones: Evernote and Facebook. Evernote transforms the eReader into a fantastic planner where you can jot down all your notes, appointments, and daily tasks. You write them on your computer and sync them with the eReader. But you can also install other applications like Pocket or Telegram ; let's not forget that the underlying operating system is Android.
Regarding the purchase of ebooks, we could not verify it first hand since the eReader informed us that there was a problem with the ebookstore and the region, perhaps the change process is already underway that you will surely have available now.
Finally, I should mention that the Sony PRS-T3 comes with a very useful protective case that will help save your eReader from accidental bumps. However, if you don't want it, you can also buy the eReader without the case, which will reduce the price. It's up to you. What do you think of this review?
