Microsoft Edge will be an ebook reader as well as a browser

Microsoft Edge

One of the most common complaints from Windows 10 users is the lack of good, free apps for reading ebooks , especially free ebooks in epub format. This is often addressed by proprietary applications or by installing Calibre, the popular free ebook manager.

But it seems this is about to change. Microsoft reports that its new web browser will be more than just a browser. Microsoft Edge will receive new features with future system updates, with ebook reader functionality being the first feature to be added.

Thus, Microsoft Edge will be the default ebook reader for free EPUB files in Windows 10. This feature won't surprise many, as it's something many web browsers already offer. They all read PDF files and ebooks, but all require add-ons or plugins. However, Microsoft Edge will be the first to support this feature natively.

Microsoft Edge will be able to read ebooks without DRM

But that's not all. Microsoft Edge will read Epub files by incorporating an ebook reader like those currently found on eReaders or Android tablets . This will allow us to read in ambient light, insert bookmarks, change the font type and size, and more.

Unfortunately, this feature will not be available to Windows 10 users until March , the month in which the major Windows 10 update will be released, but those who are users of the Fast ring will receive it in the coming days.

For Android, Linux, iOS, and many other operating systems, there are many applications for reading ebooks; however, for Windows 10 and its tablets, there aren't many. This new feature might improve the situation , especially since many browsers will try to follow suit and incorporate the reading of epub files, thus providing more options to choose from , don't you think?
