The Kobo Aura One, Kobo's new device, is available for pre-order today. Many of us have already had the chance to try it out and learn about its strengths and weaknesses. Some owners of this eReader have been more adventurous and decided to open it up to see if it truly lives up to its claims or if it holds any surprises, like the Kobo Glo HD. And it certainly does have surprises.
The new Kobo Aura One does not have a microSD card slot like other eReaders, so we cannot expand the memory capacity nor can we easily replace it in case of failure.
The brave souls who decided to do this are from an Italian blog called HDblog.it , where they bypassed the protective rubber casing of the Kobo Aura One to see what was inside. For many, this is bad news, as reading a lot of PDF files will quickly fill up the Kobo Aura One's internal storage and negatively impact the device's performance.
Internal storage cannot be expanded using a microsd card reader
The truth is that it's true, but the most alarming thing about the situation is that Calibre, the ebook manager, doesn't yet handle this eReader well, so the main ally a user has to deal with the ereader's limited capacity is not available.
In any case, there are still many days before this new Kobo device is available , which will allow the developers of the Kobo Aura One to improve the situation and enable access to an extra cloud storage application, or perhaps allow Calibre to improve the device's management. In any case, there's room for improvement in the eReader even without a microSD card reader , don't you think?
