I know that by now many of you are already familiar with or have heard of a new large-screen eReader, the Pocketbook Cad Reader , an electronic reader ideal for reading CAD files. Well, at the same time as the announcement of this new eReader came out, news also broke about a new technology called Fina from the company E-Ink, which, as you all know by now, is a company specializing in e-ink displays and supplies them to companies such as Amazon, Kobo, and Sony.
Although it is now well confirmed that Fina is not present in the Pocketbook CAD Reader , it is confirmed that Fina exists and is presented as a very interesting reality.
Fina, Carta or Pearl, which one to choose?
Fina is an e-ink display technology, thinner than its predecessors and available in larger sizes, making it more practical for eReaders or larger devices. Fina is also one of the lightest display technologies; for example, a 13,3″ screen would weigh only 60 grams. The director of E-Ink has not only spoken about Fina but has also stated that Fina displays are thinner, lighter, larger, and consume the least amount of power to date. These claims have not yet been verified, but we do know that it will also be one of the displays with the lowest resolution per inch, as the average resolution is 150 ppi, while devices like the Kobo Aura HD reach 265 ppi . This is perhaps the element of prejudice that makes many think that this technology will be much talked about, since the manufacturing costs will be lower compared to the large screens that are manufactured now, which have high costs and make it impossible to develop eReaders with large screens.
Opinion
But I want to go, or rather I am going, a step further. Do you remember that documentation about the Kindle Paperwhite 3 was leaked last week? Do you remember the long-standing rumor about the Kindle DX refresh? It doesn't take much to connect the dots, especially if I tell you that there's an agreement between Amazon and E-Ink whereby E-Ink provides Amazon with the new technology first. This already happened with Carta , and it might happen now with Fina, but then where does that leave E-Ink? Currently, eReader manufacturers have access to Pearl technology , the predecessor to Carta. If Amazon were to obtain Fina as well, manufacturers might consider E-Ink an "Amazon department" and therefore disregard it. Or, it could also turn out that, by considering E-Ink part of Amazon, many manufacturers would start contracting with E-Ink, which casts doubt on the impartial stance that E-Ink always claims to maintain. What I can say with certainty is that the new Kindle DX is closer than ever. Don't you think?
