America's Libraries Are Filled With… Video Games

Library with video games

Libraries are for reading books, not renting movies! I still remember hearing these words years ago from several members of my local library when they saw the section for renting VHS tapes and DVDs. Something that surely shocked many of you at the time, and it seems it won't be the only thing that will shock people in libraries soon.

American libraries continue to innovate and have now decided to incorporate video games into their lending catalog , so that children and adults alike can rent video games along with some reading material.

Video games in libraries are causing more children to consult the bookshelves

This might seem counterproductive to many, but the truth is that librarians in libraries offering this option report increased visits to their shelves, not only for video games but also for books , which are being consulted more often, though also played. The fact is, there are currently very few places where you can rent movies or video games, which makes the library a popular destination and, consequently, helps more people discover the joy of reading.

The addition of video games isn't the only technology that has been incorporated in recent years. Computers with internet access and workstations with open-source hardware are two elements that have been added to the film library . While this hasn't yet reached Spain, it's proving very successful in the English-speaking world, making libraries centers of knowledge and culture once again—centers that receive hundreds of visitors a day, something not seen since ancient times.

We hope this will be massively expanded, but we also hope it reaches other countries like Spain . If it delivers the expected results, it's well worth having in libraries , don't you think?
