
The e-book landscape is about to undergo a major shift. Amazon appears to be designing a new generation of its Kindle devices that will allow users to replace the battery themselves, moving away from the trend of sealed components that has prevailed in recent years.
This move is not accidental; it responds to the need to align with European Union guidelines. In Spain and the rest of the continent, legislation is pushing towards a more sustainable and repairable technology model, forcing brands to rethink how they manufacture their gadgets.
The engine of change: European Union regulations

The main reason for this adjustment is Article 11 of EU Regulation 2023/1542. This regulation, which will come into force on 18 February 2027, requires that mobile device batteries be easily removable and replaceable by the end consumer throughout the product's life cycle.
To prevent companies from creating obstacles, Brussels has been very clear about the rules. Users cannot be forced to buy unusual or proprietary tools; the replacement must be possible with standard screwdrivers or even manual opening mechanisms. The idea is that anyone can open the device without fear of breaking it and without needing to be an electronics expert.
Evidence found in Amazon software
Although Amazon hasn't made any official statement, clues have surfaced in the code. After analyzing the Kindle firmware version —which was quickly withdrawn—specific warning messages were discovered for when the system detects an unrecognized battery.
The software would warn that charging has been limited to protect the device and would recommend installing an official Amazon battery to restore original performance. Most interestingly, the system also displays a QR code that would lead the user to purchase a replacement kit with detailed instructions for performing the process at home.
Towards a more open and durable design

Looking at the design of current Kindles, such as the Paperwhite, we see that the battery is glued to the casing, even though it's connected by a cable. To comply with the law, Amazon will likely implement screw-on casings instead of sealed ones and use adhesives that can be easily removed.
This represents a return to the brand's roots, as the first models were simpler to open. Now, the challenge is to ensure the device remains lightweight and water-resistant, while significantly extending its lifespan by eliminating the need to discard the entire reader when the battery starts to fail, thus preventing users from finding themselves stuck on a low battery screen.
This change is another step in the fight for the right to repair, following in the footsteps of other adjustments such as the universal USB-C port. Ultimately, the ability for users in Europe to easily recharge their Kindles means less e-waste and cost savings for those who enjoy digital reading.
